The Hiring Scottish Open

How hiring feels like trying to watch the Scottish Open

Last week, a founder told me that hiring senior Cloud and Data talent feels harder than finding a working Scottish Open stream when you're outside the UK. Geo blocks everywhere, dodgy workarounds, and by the time you finally get access, someone’s already three shots ahead.

And thanks to TechRadar’s article 'How to watch Scottish Open 2026: Live Streams, TV Channels & Preview, Round 1 tee times' (source: https://www.techradar.com/how-to-watch/golf/how-to-watch-scottish-open-2026-live-streams-tv-channels-preview), the metaphor basically wrote itself.

Because hiring right now is exactly that. High demand, limited access, and the feeling that the best action is happening somewhere just out of reach.

The illusion of access

Golf broadcasters love telling you the event is easy to watch. “Available globally!” they say. Until you try to watch it in, say, Lagos or Lisbon. Then suddenly it's VPNs, regional restrictions and subscription bundles that require a PhD to untangle.

Tech hiring works the same way. Everyone talks about a "huge talent pool", but try hiring a Senior Cyber Engineer or a Head of Data in London or Edinburgh and you’ll quickly discover:

  • The best people aren’t advertising themselves.
  • The best people are already taken.
  • The best people only engage through trusted networks.

On paper, it’s accessible. In reality, it’s anything but.

Too much noise, not enough clarity

Golf coverage gives you commentary, statistics, drone shots, weather reports and swing analyses. Yet you still miss the shot you wanted to see because the coverage jumped somewhere else.

Hiring suffers the same fate. Endless CVs. Interview kits. LinkedIn messages. Testing platforms. Everyone promising "visibility", but none giving a clear view of who is actually right for your business.

The signal-to-noise ratio is abysmal.

And no, adding more platforms or AI tools doesn’t fix this. It just gives you more ways to confuse yourself.

Everyone wants the same tee times

The Scottish Open has marquee groups. The ones everyone tunes in for.

Hiring has its own marquee groups too. They’re called "senior leaders who’ve scaled before", "Data specialists who can actually tell stories with numbers" and "Cloud engineers you don’t need to babysit".

Every scale-up, every fintech, every climate-tech, every SME chasing transformation wants them. The competition is brutal. And unlike golfers, they aren’t contractually obliged to show up for your organisation.

If you want the top players, you need a better strategy than “post job, pray, wait”.

So how do you get a front row seat?

Here are practical ways to stop hunting in the dark and actually access the talent you need.

  • Know the role cold. Not just the job description, but the business drivers behind it. Talent follows clarity.
  • Shorten your hiring cycle. Long processes lose the best people. Simple.
  • Use a recruiter who lives in the niche. Not a generalist. Not a high-street shop. Someone who works only with the kinds of candidates you want.
  • Ask for market insight before you ask for CVs. You can't compete if you don’t understand the field.
  • Stop selling the job. Sell the mission. Senior tech talent joins purpose, not tasks.

Questions worth asking your team this week

  • Do we actually know what the best candidate looks like, or just what skills we want?
  • Would we hire our own process? No? Then change it.
  • Are we competing with salaries, missions or culture? And which one gives us the edge?
  • Who do we know that knows the people we want?

The final word

Watching the Scottish Open shouldn’t be this complicated. Hiring shouldn’t be either. But here we are.

If you’re tired of geo-blocked access to talent, it might be time to update your approach and your network. At Xist4, this is exactly what we fix. We bring the right players to your tee box so you don’t spend months chasing shadows.

And you won’t need a VPN to get to them.
