Job Description

Systems Engineer | eDV, Hybrid Infrastructure, AWS, Azure | Cheltenham
£65,000 to £75,000. Permanent, full-time.
Cheltenham. Fully on-site. Regular working hours.

You'll design, build and keep running secure infrastructure for government and regulated clients, across their own kit and the cloud. Then you'll prove it all works.

Our client is a technical, data and management consultancy based in Cheltenham. They work for UK Government departments and for businesses in sensitive, heavily regulated industries, mostly on data management, digital transformation and cloud. Their consultants scope and deliver programmes that run for years. Expect clients who check your working.

The estates are on-premises, cloud and hybrid, often all three in one programme. Servers, networks, storage and virtualisation on one side, AWS and Azure on the other. It's all secure, multi-domain work, where hardening and secure-by-design are the starting point, not a final check.

You'll work alongside architects, project managers and service teams, and customers will come to you for a straight technical answer. The hours are regular. The honest constraint is clearance: without active eDV today, we can't consider you, however strong the rest of your CV. The client also needs your experience to come from consultancy, government, defence, security or another regulated setting.

The job
Build and run. Designing, deploying and maintaining infrastructure across on-premises, cloud and hybrid. Configuring and tuning servers, networks, storage and virtualisation. Watching performance and capacity. When it breaks, you find the root cause.
Engineering discipline. This is systems engineering across the full lifecycle: requirements capture, design, integration, testing, acceptance and in-service support. You manage requirements, verification and traceability, carry out technical assurance and write the design documents and engineering reports that show it all holds up.
Change and service. Upgrades, migrations and technology refresh. Configuration, change and release management. Incident and problem work.

What you'll bring
Essential:

  • Active eDV security clearance.
  • Systems engineering in consultancy, government, defence, security or another regulated setting.
  • Design and build of secure infrastructure, networks and information systems.
  • Hands-on work across on-premises and cloud, in AWS or Azure.
  • System hardening and secure-by-design in practice.
  • Requirements management, verification and traceability.
  • Troubleshooting and root cause analysis on complex systems.
  • Existing right to work in the UK.

Useful: systems integration and technical assurance, resilience and disaster recovery design, ITIL, PRINCE2, Agile, Scrum or Kanban.

Who this suits
You've probably been a Systems Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer or Senior Systems Engineer, with a defence supplier, an integrator or a consultancy on secure government work. You're as comfortable writing the design document as you are on a console fixing the thing it describes.

If you want to design and never touch a live system, or keep systems running without the requirements and paperwork that go with it, the balance here will feel wrong. This job needs both halves.
