Senior Java Architect

Location: London (Hybrid – 2 days office / 3 days home)

We’re hiring a Senior Java Architect to help design, build, and scale a modern, cloud-native platform used by organisations that rely on reliability, performance, and well-engineered systems.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys writing production code, shaping system design through delivery, and improving how software is built and shipped. You’ll work across core Java services, influence architectural direction through real implementation, and play a key role in embedding GenAI capabilities into the platform.

Why this role?

This is not an ivory-tower architecture position. As a Senior Java Architect, you’ll stay close to the code while helping the team make better technical decisions as systems evolve. The focus is on practical engineering: building resilient services, modernising where it matters, and delivering features that stand up in production.

GenAI is a core part of the roadmap — treated as an engineering discipline, not a bolt-on experiment.

Key Skills & Experience

You don’t need to have held the exact title Senior Java Architect to be a strong fit. If you’ve worked as a Senior Java Engineer, Lead Backend Engineer, Principal Engineer, Platform Engineer, or Software Architect and remain hands-on, your background is likely relevant.

Essential

• Strong commercial experience building and shipping Java services (ideally Spring Boot)
• Designing and delivering distributed systems with a focus on performance and resilience
• Experience building cloud-native services (containers, scalable service patterns)
• Solid API design experience (REST and integration patterns)
• Confident working with SQL and relational data models
• GenAI integration experience (LLM-enabled features, retrieval approaches, evaluation and guardrails)

Useful to have

• Exposure to NoSQL technologies where appropriate
• CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and production observability
• Experience improving system performance, reliability, or developer experience
• Mentoring engineers through design discussions and code reviews

What you’ll be doing

As a Senior Java Architect, you’ll balance delivery with technical leadership:

• Build and evolve core Java/Spring Boot services
• Design service boundaries and integration patterns that scale
• Lead technical design through hands-on implementation
• Deliver reference patterns and improve engineering standards
• Identify and fix performance, reliability, and architectural pain points
• Embed GenAI functionality safely and pragmatically into production systems
• Collaborate closely with engineers and product partners to turn priorities into shipped software
