IT skills in (seriously) high demand in the UK

There is a shortage of IT staff in the UK. It's a bit of a problem actually for UK businesses. Fewer people are entering the field than in previous years, particularly women, and it's leading to a bit of a shortfall.

This is good news for people of a technical nature however because it means demand is at an all-time high for certain skills.

In 2015 it is estimated that around 24% of businesses wish to or plan to expand their IT infrastructure. In fact the IT skills that are the most in demand are those related to expansion. So it's champagne all round for project managers and programmers.

Let's take a closer look at the IT skills that are most in demand in 2015 in the UK.

Programming and Application Development

Particularly for large scale, challenging projects. It's the red carpet treatment all the way for people with enough technical experience to manage and deliver complex projects. IT departments around the UK are most likely to have vacancies for programmers and developers than any other role.

Project Management

Next on the list is project management - again as a result of large scale IT expansion being planned around the UK. With the projects that require management being usually of a complex nature, it's staff with many years’ experience that are most highly sought. PMs who are particularly accomplished at bridging the gap between those on the business side of a project and those on the technical side are getting snapped up.

Help Desk / Technical Support

It's imperative that every company has good technical support available and the larger an organisation becomes, the more these skills are required. With "bring your own device" programs on the rise, the breadth of hardware within one organisation that requires support is also increasing.

Security / Compliance Governance

No one wants to take any chances when it comes to security so a lot of IT departments are taking on more staff in this area to minimise vulnerabilities and prevent security breaches from happening. So technical architects and other experts in this field will find themselves in high demand in 2015 (and probably beyond).

Web Development

Lastly, demand for web development skills is extremely high with demand outweighing supply, considerably. Do you develop websites? There could be a whole host of opportunities just waiting for you to grab.
